Welcome to Puanani's Hale
Kalihiwai, Kaua'i, Hawaii
Aloha and
welcome to Puanani’s Hale at Kalihiwai. This little cottage was originally built
by Lani and Puanani Hanchett as a retreat for themselves from the hustle and
bustle of Honolulu. The foundation of this cottage has withstood tidal waves,
hurricanes, floods, and tropical storms. It began as a little one story one room
shell, became a two story complex, and after ‘Hurricane Iniki’ , is back to one
level again. We, the Hanchett Ohana, ~ Carolyn, Suzi, Stuart, and Tiare ~ have
loving memories of times spent in this wonderful home we call Puanani’s Hale. We
hope you will enjoy your visit and love Kalihiwai as much as we do.
Puanani's Hale is located on the north shore of Kaua'i.
Follow the signs as you exit the Lihue airport that lead you north to Kilauea,
Princeville, or Hanalei. The drive is approximately 45 minutes. Approximately a
mile after the town of Kilauea (at the 25 mile marker), you will cross a bridge.
The first right turn after the bridge is Kalihiwai Road. Turn right here and
follow the road (veer to the right at the fork) to the valley. Turn right after
the house on the corner and Puanani’s Hale is the second house on the left with
a deck facing the road. You will see PUANANI in large block letters on the wall
behind the deck.
A leisurely one
minute stroll makai (toward the water) will lead you to Kalihiwai
River. After braving a quick swim or brisk walk across the river step
ashore onto one of the most spectacular beaches on the north coast of
Kauai. Calm and serene most of the year, Kalihiwai Bay
becomes a winter haven for avid
surfers from December through March.
Just down the road from the cottage is Anini Beach
with approximately 2 miles of
white sandy shoreline protected by a large reef. Walk out into the calm waters
and swim safely. Great for children.
Enjoy surfing, snorkeling, diving, boating, windsurfing, kayaking, helicopter
rides, hiking, horseback riding, fishing charters, exploring a Hawaiian culture
and art center, and many other activities.
